Boat Raffle Success

CRMC Trustees orchestrated a raffle of two boats built and completed at the Boat Shop this spring. They were an International Optimist Pram and a Platt Monfort designed ‘Geodesic Airolite’ 8ft. Westport Dinghy. Over 650 raffle tickets were sold at the WoodenBoat Show at Mystic Seaport, and an additional 700+ at Artists on the Lane, July 4th in Bellport. The proceeds substantially augmented the Maritime Center’s coffers.

After reviewing Opti rigging procedures Kendall Webre and ‘Hank’ Maust pose with the boat that Kendall named Dot after her grandmother who she said was also ‘small and fast’.

Winner Ann Kaiser shoulders her 33 pound prize!

The Optimist was one of the origional 1998 fleet that initiated Opti sailing at Bellport Bay Yacht Club. This particular Opti was slated for ‘Hank’ Maust’s grandauters but unfortunatly was not completed before they outgrew the class. Hank donated the boat to the Maritime Center and completed it, with help from Trustee Larry Deering, in time for this year’s fundraising raffle.

The drawing, July 4, was won by Liz Scott-Graham (nee Honnet) who was in town from California for her 50th high school reunion. She immediately gave the boat to her daughter-in-law, Kendell Webre, to take to Virginia for use by Liz’ grandchildren.

The ‘Geodesic Airolite’ Westport Dinghy was constructed primarily by Trustee Charlie Flagg with help from various other CRMC Trustees. The construction technique features steam bent ash frames, Sitka spruce stringers, and a ‘skin’ of heat shrunk Dacron fabric, producing an 8 ft. boat weighing only 33 pounds! The winner was Ann Kaiser of East Patchogue, coincidentally an aficionado of ultra-light boat construction.
