Women Builders ‘Graduate’

Seven women, who built boats in our “Women Only” class this past Winter-Spring semester, celebrated with a ‘launching party’
Saturday afternoon July 16th at Squassux Landing. Six had built Wood Duck 12’ kayaks and one a Chester Yawl
rowing skiff, all from Chesapeake Light Craft kits.

Starting in December 2010 the ‘women only’ builders began construction under the guidance of our dedicated volunteer instructors. For most of the participants, it was their first boat building experience or major building project of any kind.
Assembly of the parts from the CLC kits began well and confidence built as the hulls took shape.

Although some difficulties were encountered with several deck seam alignments and absences for family vacations, the project moved ahead but with some participants’ progress considerably outpacing others. In the end, all of the builders successfully completed what proved to be a fleet of lovely boats and each experienced well deserved pride in their accomplishments.
